Oh, mein Lieber !!!!! Is there anybody out there who knows the city Gera ??? Those priceless memories! My family had no garden. But my girlfriend did. By the way I'm an old girl now We used to sneek into her house after school fearing the booming voice of her mother: Is that you, Eva???.We rolled our eyes. : The well known fact: We had to go to the Schrebergarten . Hauling water .Soaking a million plants. A long way up the Nicolaiberg, towards the Ferberturm. After this we felt entitled to rid the garden of its sweet, delicious green peas. .When ask, we blamed the Amseln. A sweetly singing bird the size of an American Robin. Too much to tell. Too much to remember. If I didn't bore you, I will continue. Let me know! One last thing: We hid, among other things, our report cards there! Loveya.Gerburg. Someone else with that name??? Never found one.

Schrebergarten (we call it allotment in England), has spread even to Morocco, where I spend the winter. We park our motorhomes , buy sunflower seeds, plant them, with some geraniums from home and , we invite our German friends for a Gin and Tonic !

Thanks for the article and pictures. As a young american soldier stationed in Augsburg I was able to visit a Schrebergarten a time or two and thought what a great idea. Just visiting the snack shack located within during a volksmarch was very peaceful. I look it up today because of fond memories.
