Couldn't agree more about the excellence of German beer and bread. Wherever I've lived since returning from Germany in 1977, I've tried to find the nearest thing to these two staples wherever I've been. It's got gradually easier since UK artisan baking grew incrementally. The best and nearest bread was from a Polish bakery nearby. As for beer, again our native brewing has improved gradually since the bad old days in the 70's. Greatest sadness: Duesseldorf Alt doesn't travel. Still, that justifies a trip every now and then.
