From 1978 to 1980 I worked at a private school in Switzerland. At that time, the majority of the boarding pupils were German, with very rich parents. (Today these are mainly Russian, the children of mini-oligarchs).

Few of these German pupils were bright, and some were, as you suggest, definitely 'thick'. Very sadly, though, the main reason for them being there was that their parent or parents simply did not want them at home at all. The school was happy to offer 'holiday programmes for those unable to go home' - at an extra charge, of course. A few children were even told not to come home for Christmas!
