It would seem so, Barbara. I’m from Heidelberg and used to live just outside the city. A few years ago, I showed my British husband the area, and we went along the river Neckar (Hirschhorn is another picturesque town to visit), and also to Speyer. I always love coming back.

I prefer the idea of “fewer bricks and mortar” on lists like this. So it has to be sitting in an old Berlin bar, sipping local beer, which makes me happy when in Germany. Great atmosphere, and a great way to meet the locals. Their football grounds are great, too.

As for other cities, Flensburg deserves a shout, but no-one I know ever mentions it. A pretty outlook, and a typical border-town openness.

Delighted to see Heidelberg Castle in the top spot. As I’m from the area, I also agree with you about Speyer Cathedral, one of my favourite cathedrals in Europe with a fascinating wealth of history.

As for the beach on Juist, well, it brings back wonderful childhood memories. Definitely should make a ‘must see’ list.
