Fleming’s Frankfurt City

This 5-star hotel used to be the offices of chemical giant Bayer, built in the 1950s. The interior of the listed building therefore displays some lovely retro touches, including a splendid paternoster lift (when do you get to ride one of these nowadays!) that you can take up to the hotel’s restaurant and rooftop bar for great views of Frankfurt and the Eschenheimer Turm tower right opposite. The latter used to be a city gate and part of Frankfurt’s late-medieval fortifications. Look out for two pieces of wood that were found in 2015 during extension work for the hotel that were part of the fortification and are now displayed on the outside wall.

Motel One Frankfurt Römer

This latest addition to the portfolio of four Motel One hotels in Frankfurt is only a five minute walk from Römer square and perfect for exploring the new Old Town. Just around the corner, Buchgasse (book alley) was the venue for the first Frankfurt Book Fair in 1480 and the stylish lounge takes up the theme with print letters and other historical references. Apart from that, it is the usual, dependable Motel One budget-boutique concept with modern rooms, no frills and good value for money.

The Suite Garden

Attractively located right behind Alte Oper, the leafy Suite Garden offers boutique style accommodation in rooms that are all equipped with (smaller or bigger) kitchen facilities. Each suite is individually styled, part modern, part retro, and feel more like small apartments than hotel rooms. Sister hotel The Suite Fabric is on Hanauer Landstraße in Frankfurt’s east.

Spenerhaus

If there is one thing only that makes the Spenerhaus a very handy choice for a Frankfurt city break it is the location. Tucked away in a quiet location on a small alley, it is still right in the middle of everything and near to the Cathedral, Römer and Zeil. The hotel, which surprisingly has 28 single and eight double rooms is part of a former Dominican Monastery, now seat of the Protestant Regional Association who also runs the hotel and its conference facilities. Don’t expect cool design features here, but spacious, clean and modern rooms, friendly service and, well, the location.

Mainhaus Stadthotel Frankfurt

At the eastern fringes of the city centre, this 45-room hotel breathes the spirit of Adolph Kolping, a Roman Catholic priest who originally trained as a shoemaker and in the 19^th century founded the Kolping Association to support workers and improve their working conditions. The rooms are simple but light, clean and modern. They all feature contemporary crosses, unique pieces created by students of an art academy in Hesse, so if you have a problem with religious signs, this is not for you. However, don’t be deterred by the religious connotation: This is a ‘normal’ hotel in a great location, offering very good value for money plus a nice restaurant on site and ample breakfast buffet.

A 100-year-old villa just south of the Main river has been transformed into a boutique hotel on a presidential scale, with a peaceful central courtyard at its heart. A favourite for everyone from chief executives to German football stars, it also has strong connections with private health clinics just around the corner. Part of the Rocco Forte chain.

Hotel Villa Orange

Slightly quirky owner-run hotel in relatively central position, comfortably modern, without trying too hard to be fashionable. Emphasis on sustainability. No particular bells and whistles, but good at what it does.
