With a name like this, you’d expect it to be young and groovy – and it is. What’s more, it is in Hamburg’s new waterfront district, not far from the nearly-finished giant glass wave that is the Elbe Philharmonie. Interiors are cheerful and busy, prices are not too high, and elements of ships and shipbuilding – crates, planks, etc – have been incorporated into the design. A nice sense of community, but you’d have to be quite a well-heeled young traveller to stay here.

Landhaus Flottbeck

Typical brick-built Niedersachsen rural farmhouse, converted to a rather charming country house hotel, but in the city. Bedrooms are generous and contemporary in styling, whilst the restaurant and the exterior is a blend of contemporary and rustic. The restaurant is big with non-residents, and the hotel does good trade in business meetings. Dogs can stay too.

East Hotel

Is is a hotel? A club? A restaurant? A spa? The answer is all of the above, and it’s getting a hell of a lot of good press. Hyper-cool design hotel in a listed former ironworks in a street that runs parallel to the Reeperbahn, Hamburg’s (in)famous nightlife area, in a conversion by a Chicago-based architect. The restaurant has made a name for itself for its crossover Asian/European cuisine, the spa carries on the theme, and so do the rooms, to a limited extent. And as for the latter, there’s a bewildering selection of sizes and styles, presumably to suit as many budgets as possible.

Hotel Louis C. Jacob

A distinctive and chic alternative to city centre grand dame hotels like the Vier Jahreseiten and the Atlantic Kempinski, the Louis C Jacob is in one of the city’s most sumptuous merchant mansions out on the Elbchaussee, the city’s millionaire’s row, with views down onto the Elbe itself. Fresh, bright, contemporary style, with the feel of a private house rather than a hotel, and a Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s Hamburg’s equivalent of a Rhode Island or Cape Cod luxury pad, and its packages even include a side-trip option to the (very hip) island of Sylt.

Empire Riverside Hotel

Designer skyscraper right on the edge of the Elbe, with fantastic views down over the port. If you want large, international, super elegant and new, this is it. Hamburg pretending to be New York. State of the art rooms, plus all the facilities it should have, as well as three restaurants. The emphasis in the spa is more on fitness than wellness, and the prices are surprisingly accessible, particularly at weekends.
