Fleming’s Frankfurt City

This 5-star hotel used to be the offices of chemical giant Bayer, built in the 1950s. The interior of the listed building therefore displays some lovely retro touches, including a splendid paternoster lift (when do you get to ride one of these nowadays!) that you can take up to the hotel’s restaurant and rooftop bar for great views of Frankfurt and the Eschenheimer Turm tower right opposite. The latter used to be a city gate and part of Frankfurt’s late-medieval fortifications. Look out for two pieces of wood that were found in 2015 during extension work for the hotel that were part of the fortification and are now displayed on the outside wall.

Motel One Frankfurt Römer

This latest addition to the portfolio of four Motel One hotels in Frankfurt is only a five minute walk from Römer square and perfect for exploring the new Old Town. Just around the corner, Buchgasse (book alley) was the venue for the first Frankfurt Book Fair in 1480 and the stylish lounge takes up the theme with print letters and other historical references. Apart from that, it is the usual, dependable Motel One budget-boutique concept with modern rooms, no frills and good value for money.

The Suite Garden

Attractively located right behind Alte Oper, the leafy Suite Garden offers boutique style accommodation in rooms that are all equipped with (smaller or bigger) kitchen facilities. Each suite is individually styled, part modern, part retro, and feel more like small apartments than hotel rooms. Sister hotel The Suite Fabric is on Hanauer Landstraße in Frankfurt’s east.

Spenerhaus

If there is one thing only that makes the Spenerhaus a very handy choice for a Frankfurt city break it is the location. Tucked away in a quiet location on a small alley, it is still right in the middle of everything and near to the Cathedral, Römer and Zeil. The hotel, which surprisingly has 28 single and eight double rooms is part of a former Dominican Monastery, now seat of the Protestant Regional Association who also runs the hotel and its conference facilities. Don’t expect cool design features here, but spacious, clean and modern rooms, friendly service and, well, the location.

Mainhaus Stadthotel Frankfurt

At the eastern fringes of the city centre, this 45-room hotel breathes the spirit of Adolph Kolping, a Roman Catholic priest who originally trained as a shoemaker and in the 19^th century founded the Kolping Association to support workers and improve their working conditions. The rooms are simple but light, clean and modern. They all feature contemporary crosses, unique pieces created by students of an art academy in Hesse, so if you have a problem with religious signs, this is not for you. However, don’t be deterred by the religious connotation: This is a ‘normal’ hotel in a great location, offering very good value for money plus a nice restaurant on site and ample breakfast buffet.

Briedenbacher Hof

This five-star-plus establishment is a three minute walk from Düsseldorf’s ultra-chic shopping street, the Königsallee. Upstairs is all hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, silk brocades and chrome. Downstairs is a spa and fitness centre. And a secure entrance behind the foyer leads into the Living Room, a space for guests only to relax and meet. Two floors connect to medical centres, well patronised by customers from the Middle East and from Russia. The levels of service are very high quality, and location is excellent.

Speicher7

This stunning warehouse conversion is a real surprise: Speicher7 opened in summer 2013 in what used to be an old grain store on the banks of the river Rhine in an industrial part of Mannheim and is now a stylish boutique hotel full of character and personal flair. The man behind, Jürgen Tekath, is a local entrepreneur and self-made man, who not only runs his own (beautiful) flower shop but also a concept store and two very successful cafés/bars in Mannheim.

His penchant for all things Asian – he’s a practising Buddhist and keen yogi – and travelling around the world are not only visible in small details in the hotel’s 20 rooms but also in the wonderful and open-for-everyone hotel bar which is a location in its own right and combines cool and gemütlich in the best possible way. Speicher7 was “Winner of the Architecture of the Year: Conversion of an Existing Non Hotel Building to Hotel Use” award at the European Hotel Design Awards 2013 in London and it’s not difficult to see why. The original structures – and a lot of concrete – are skilfully maintained in modern, minimalistic yet soulful rooms. If you can, get a room facing the river and featuring huge panorama windows. Most spectacular is the Silo Lounge room with a 12 metre high original silo in the bathroom. Wash your hands, look up and be surprised.

Haus Noge

Haus Noge on Germany’s arguably most famous island Sylt is a charming B&B in a former captain’s house from the 19th century. It’s conveniently located just off Westerland’s main pedestrianised shopping street Friedrichstrasse and features eight individually furnished rooms. The owner, an adman from Hamburg, seems to have a penchant for mixing and matching, and it’s very skilfully and quirkily done, using antique items and modern fittings. Breakfast is served until 12 pm in a cosy room that features the owner’s collection of dolls’ heads.

Rhönhotel Sächsischer Hof

Good value historic hotel. Recently refurbished (Easter 2013), with careful attention paid to timbers, stucco ceilings and wood panelling, the 26-room Sächsischer Hof dates back to 1623. Emperor Franz I, Goethe and Ernest Hemingway all stayed here. The refurbishment introduced a new 500m² spa and fitness area with two saunas as well as a steam bath, fitness area, and solarium. The village of Dermbach itself is located in the state triangle of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia, a location that tends to be overlooked.

Jagdhaus Waldfrieden

Pretty, story-book hotel in its own park which does good business in romantic weekends away for Hamburgers. Rather floral in design for modern taste.
