]]> Never mind the rather unappetising name, this is a delectable selection of places to stay. It’s a sort of campus of cottages, each with its own distinctive quality, for example a tree house, a house on the water’s edge, a garden house, etc, each purpose built and modern, with a Mediterranean ambience. Breakfast is delivered to each cottage, whilst dinner can be served in the cottage, too, or taken in the main building, with other guests. Location is interesting, with mountains, lakes and the Danube all nearby.

]]> English-speaking Silvia Barber, who is very involved in the tourism profile of the area, runs the kind of full-service guesthouse that you only find in Germany. Sauna, fitness room, massage room, quiet room, and all in a traditional chalet-style building with a modern finish. Also offers the Schrothkur, a traditional spa treatment. Oberstaufen itself is a traditional ski centre in winter and a walking and hiking centre in summer, but this is a proper town in the valley not ski dormitory up on the snow line.

The various buildings offer a choice of styles, from Bavarian to Italian, Nordic to rustic, plus three restaurants, a spa and five stars.  Tegernsee is one of Bavaria’s most picture-postcard settings, and it offers lots of mountain- and water-related activities, but is also no more than 50km away from Munich.
