Very much a place of superlatives. Large, sumptuous, luxurious, fabulously situated and with a real cultural intent. The hotel’s particulars are extraordinary: four spas, six restaurants, two concert halls and two libraries. There are sufficient spa treatments here to keep spa addicts entertained for weeks, plus a schedule of concerts and kids events. The meadowland setting, too, is bewitchingly beautiful.

Schloss Oberambach

Imposing period country manor house in a beautiful setting on the edge of the lake where King Ludwig II was found dead, 35km south of Munich. The hotel is run along organic lines, with gentle activity and various spa cures on the menu. Traditional interiors.

Hotel Sturm

Another family-run bio-hotel, with the emphasis on sustainability, on Wellness, and on family holidays. Design is an eclectic mix of rustic and über-modern architecture. In the middle of a nature reserve on the edge of the Thuringian Forest, and with a swimming pond rather than pool, complete with frogs, dragonflies etc.

Am Vieh-Theater

Despite the slightly strange name, this is a new, wood-framed highly sustainable bio-hotel in a pure rural setting. Only eight rooms, no compromise on quality or ideology from the young couple that run it, and yet quite chic at the same time. The ‘theatre’ in the name originates from the couple‘s shared passion for live drama, and a play on the word ‘amphitheatre’. Particularly good value, and good for families, with llamas, rabbits etc on the property. Pleasant countryside, although it’s a bit of a drive away from any other major attractions.

Gasthof Zum Goldenen Löwen

We know about Golden Lions in the UK, and this one is the German equivalent. In a pretty village, on the banks of the river Naab. Unreconstructed, authentic, atmospheric place to stay, with a long tradition, a busy beer garden and its very own beer, Zoigl. The very appealing city of Regensburg is only 15kms away.

Biohotel Pausnhof

Germany takes its bio-hotels seriously, and this one is all floorboards, whitewash and simple modernity, in a chalet-style building on the fringes of the Bavarian Forest, due north of Passau. It’s a place for walking, particularly suitable for families, and its menu features a lot of home-grown produce from the direct vicinity of the hotel. Also has a spa.

Hotel Brudermühle

Delightful little former millhouse in the heart of the action of this very pretty UNESCO-registered city, with a terrace by the waterside. Family-run, nice synthesis of new and old, but rooms can be small. For more space, the hotel has apartments distributed through other buildings nearby.

Hotel Burg Wernberg

A Relais & Chateaux castle dating back to the 13^th century, lording it over the small town of Wernberg-Köblitz. Four-poster beds and super-thick stone walls, in keeping with a true noble hotel in a real knights’ castle, with food of course being a real priority. There’s a spa, nearby golf, and proximity to the Bavarian Forest and the Czech border.

Gut Sonnenhausen

A one-hundred year old stud farm estate, with extensive riding hall, makes a fairly specialist place to stay, and Gut Sonnenhausen characterises itself as an ‘event hotel‘ with themed weeks and conferences. Lovely rural setting, and the rooms are modern and airy. Lots of modern art, some of it left behind from art weeks. Emphasis on organic cuisine. Prices based on group size.

Hofgut Hafnerleiten

Never mind the rather unappetising name, this is a delectable selection of places to stay. It’s a sort of campus of cottages, each with its own distinctive quality, for example a tree house, a house on the water’s edge, a garden house, etc, each purpose built and modern, with a Mediterranean ambience. Breakfast is delivered to each cottage, whilst dinner can be served in the cottage, too, or taken in the main building, with other guests. Location is interesting, with mountains, lakes and the Danube all nearby.
