Good value historic hotel. Recently refurbished (Easter 2013), with careful attention paid to timbers, stucco ceilings and wood panelling, the 26-room Sächsischer Hof dates back to 1623. Emperor Franz I, Goethe and Ernest Hemingway all stayed here. The refurbishment introduced a new 500m² spa and fitness area with two saunas as well as a steam bath, fitness area, and solarium. The village of Dermbach itself is located in the state triangle of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia, a location that tends to be overlooked.

Hotel Resort Schloss Auerstedt

A very weird ensemble of buildings with a solid castle in its midst. Partly vintage, partly modern, in a village close to Weimar. Avantgarde meeting room in the grounds, decorated as the Brazilian jungle.

Hotel Pension am Goethehaus

If you don’t want quite as much luxury as in the Elephant (see above), choose this place. Opened in 2012, stylistically sound – nice, bright rooms (elegant wooden floors, no carpet mites) and right by all the essential sights. You’ll never be more central!

Handsome, historical building on the market square of a lovely city. Makes a lot of its literary connections. Mix of modern and classical style, a bit swanky.

Imposing salt-spa owned by the Protestant Church Welfare of Eisenach. Own cheese production, farmshop, bike hire, holiday homes and guestrooms. Rooms are simple and unornamented. Christian prices, too.

Hotel Schieferhof

The beautiful Thuringian Forest, which is well known for walking, doesn’t have many good hotels or guesthouses. This one looks a bit like a sanatorium, but the interiors are warm and cheerful. Indoor pool.

Hotel auf der Wartburg

Luther slept here! Actually, just over there…the hotel is just across the way from the Wartburg itself, up on a hilltop in the forest, but the view is the same, as is the sense of isolation. And you can sleep in a ‘Luther room’, albeit a lot more comfortable than the great reformer’s experience.
