In reply to subodh kumar. Usually they stay on the mountain pasture from April to September where they are milked and cared for by herds man or women. Some of them still live in Alms (mountain huts) but most of them go down to the valley every day. Most of the cows are dairy cows.

This is a very interesting tradition.I will like to learn more about German tradition of domestic cows .
1.For how many days these cows remain in the pastures?
2. During their stay in Alps are they ,milked?
3. Are these Dairy cows?

In reply to Charlotte Freeman. I too recently took part in a descent. They moved surprisingly fast, and sometimes the herdsmen had to run to keep up. It's a unique tradition with a great community spirit and it happens all over the Alps at around the end of September.

Of all the incredible experiences I enjoyed during my 6 weeks in Bavaria, my visit to the Zell “bringing the cows off the mountain” celebration was my favorite. I’m from ranch country in Wyoming; but I’ve never seen anything to equal this event.
